Countdown to the NHL lockout: 24 days
One of the strangest aspects of the NHL's offer to the players is a 5-year restrictions on contracts. Yet they do not hesitate to sign players to much longer terms with the exception of Brian Burke. Just today the Oilers signed Taylor Hall to a 7-year extension worth $42 million. Wouldn't it have made sense to wait a few weeks to see how the collective agreement negotiations go?
Here are the other long-term deals handed out just this summer:
Shea Weber - 14 years, $110.0 million
Zach Parise - 13 years, $98.0 million
Ryan Suter - 13 years, $98.0 million
Sidney Crosby - 12 years, $104.4 million
Erik Karlsson - 7 years, $45.5 million
Taylor Hall - 7 years, $42.o million
Jeff Skinner - 6 years, 34.35 million
Matt Carle - 6 years, $33.0 million
Scott Hartnell - 6 years, $28.5 million
Jason Garrison - 6 years, $27.6 million
Max Pacioretty - 6 years, $27.0 million
Wayne Simmonds - 6 years, $23.875 million
The majority of these players were not free agents but rather offered long-term extensions. In fact many team it appears like the long-term contracts because it provides some certainty with respect to star players. What the league needs to focus on is front-loaded contract that are in fact designed to circumvent the salary cap.
